30 Years of Resident Evil: The Unidentified Rival Company of Umbrella
The thirtieth anniversary of the Resident Evil saga has been significant for Capcom and its followers. The festivities included the acclaimed Resident Evil Requiem, substantial discounts on digital games, and news about an upcoming film. However, despite the celebrations, the mystery persists regarding certain fundamental aspects of the story, such as the identity of Umbrella's enigmatic 'rival company,' responsible for many conflicts across several installments of the franchise.
This organization, whose name remains undisclosed within the Resident Evil universe, played a crucial role in recruiting Ada Wong to extract confidential information from Umbrella, persuading Wesker to defect, and directing attacks against its adversary's bases. Its primary purpose was to acquire the various viral strains developed by the pharmaceutical megacorporation to create its own biological weapons. Despite achieving its initial goals, this 'rival company' ceased to be relevant in the narrative after Resident Evil 5, with no subsequent mentions in official accounts.
The first reference to this entity emerges in Resident Evil 2 (1998), where it is revealed that Ada Wong operates as its agent, tasked with obtaining data and viral samples from Umbrella. Later, in Resident Evil Code: Veronica, it is discovered that Albert Wesker had not only been a key Umbrella official, infiltrated into S.T.A.R.S., but also orchestrated his own 'death' in the first game to join this rival company. He shared his inside knowledge with them and ascended to a high-level operational position, commanding a military group, although the organization's leadership always harbored reservations about his loyalty.
Following the devastation of Raccoon City, the company intensified its operations, assaulting Umbrella's base on Rockfort Island to confiscate its resources and accelerate its downfall. With Umbrella's disappearance and its own organization established as a dominant player in the biological weapons black market, Wesker devised a plan to obtain the Las Plagas parasite, guarded by a cult in a rural area of Spain. Although he sent Ada Wong and Jack Krauser, Ada, following superior directives, delivered the control parasite directly to the organization's high command, betraying Wesker. After this deception, Wesker broke ties with the company and allied with Excella Gionne of Tricell to pursue his own ambitions in Resident Evil 5. From that point on, this company completely vanished from the saga's universe.
While some fans speculated that 'The Connections,' the enigmatic faction introduced in Resident Evil 7 and central to Resident Evil Requiem, was the same unnamed rival company of Umbrella, it has been officially confirmed that they are separate entities with distinct roles in the plot. Nevertheless, in practice, 'The Connections' has taken on the role of a hidden and influential threat within the games' narrative, replacing the old rival corporation, which has led to a notable shift in the series' atmosphere and focus.
From the early titles through Code: Veronica and its spin-offs, Resident Evil consistently explored the omnipotence of megacorporations, corporate espionage, and how the pursuit of greater power negatively impacted ordinary people. Umbrella's rival company, though never directly shown on screen, was fundamental to this storyline. With its departure, the series shifted towards global conspiracies and political control, even evident in its animated adaptations. 'The Connections' embodies the classic secret society that manipulates governments and global events, resulting in a more intimidating, yet less plausible antagonist (within the logic of a zombie and mutation game).
While Capcom might revisit the narrative of the 'mysterious rival company of Umbrella' in the future to close this chapter, its absence from 'Grace's Report' at the conclusion of Requiem suggests no immediate plans to do so. Perhaps its true name will remain unknown (despite Code: Veronica concept art identifying it as World Xenobiological Company or WXC, a detail never made official), but this leaves us ample room for speculation and debate about its significance in the franchise's universe.
