Collectible Figures of Colombia '94 vs. The "Panitas" of the 2026 FIFA World Cup
To promote the participation of the Colombian National Team in the FIFA World Cup 2026, the Colombian Football Federation has launched 15 collectible figures representing the team's players. Dubbed "Los Panitas," this collection features James Rodríguez, Luis Díaz, Juan Fernando Quintero, David Ospina, Richard Ríos, Daniel Muñoz, Jhon Arias, Johan Mojica, Jhon Lucumí, Davinson Sánchez, Yerry Mina, Jefferson Lerma, Kevin Castaño, Camilo Vargas, and head coach Néstor Lorenzo.
Each "Panitas" figure costs 24,900 Colombian pesos and can be purchased online or directly from official retail stores. While there have been other figures of Colombian national team players in the past, perhaps the most memorable are those that emerged 32 years ago.
The 1994 World Cup in the United States was a dismal tournament for Colombia, despite their overwhelming 5-0 victory against Argentina. However, it did leave behind an interesting collection of figures featuring the renowned players of that era. Carlos "El Pibe" Valderrama, Leonel Álvarez, Freddy Rincón (RIP), Óscar Córdoba, Faustino "El Tino" Asprilla, Adolfo "El Tren" Valencia, Andrés Escobar (RIP), Víctor Hugo Aristizábal, Iván René Valenciano, and Antony de Ávila were all represented with their own action figures.
That period coincided with the peak popularity of the anime "Captain Tsubasa" in Colombian households. Consequently, figures of its protagonists were also available on shelves, alongside those of the Colombian National Team, and were also manufactured by the national company Gulliver. Amidst the 1994 World Cup fever, a point was reached where, in an unlikely "crossover," combo packs were sold that included a player from the National Team and a "Captain Tsubasa" character.
Thus, it wasn't uncommon to see Oliver alongside "Chonto" Herrera, Benji and Córdoba, Richard with El Pibe, Steve with El Tino, Bruce with Álvarez, and so on. Today, the figures from the plastic company Gulliver are among the most cherished football collectibles in Colombia, highly sought after by collectors.
However, when discussing the 1994 figures, we must also mention Max Caimán, the official mascot of Colombia in the USA '94. The promotion with Max Caimán included a sticker album that told his story as an agent from planet Saurópolis, tasked with traveling to Earth in the present, forming a football team, and facing the evil Nicolai Lios and his alien team, whose henchman included an ingeniously named Arnoldo Suarezneira. Any resemblance to Warner Bros.' "Space Jam" would be purely coincidental.
In the first half of the match against Argentina, Colombia was losing 15-0, but the team mounted a heroic second-half comeback to a final score of 21-20 with a last-minute goal from "El Tren" Valencia. As for Max Caimán, the figure took on a rather superstitious role, as advertising suggested that rubbing the reptile's belly would bring luck to the national team during the World Cup matches. And, well, we already know how everything turned out.
Many insist that Colombia's bad luck in the USA '94 World Cup is due to Max Caimán. But ironically, the reptile was merely a scapegoat for what overconfidence failed to materialize.
