Fortnite's 'Save the World' Mode Finally Goes Free

A long-anticipated announcement has arrived: Fortnite's "Save the World" mode, the game's original experience, will transition from a paid title to a free-to-play model starting Thursday, April 16, 2026. Originally launched in 2017, Fortnite wasn't the popular Battle Royale we know today, but rather a multiplayer survival game that required a purchase.

Following the immense success of the Battle Royale mode, the initial experience was rebranded as "Save the World" and remained a paid offering for nearly a decade. In this mode, players explore, gather resources, and construct defenses during the day to protect their shelters from waves of monsters attacking at night.

In addition to this significant shift to a free-to-play model, Epic Games has confirmed that "Save the World" will be available for the first time on Nintendo Switch 2, expanding its reach to more platforms.

To compensate players who supported the mode from its inception and purchased it, Epic Games has announced exclusive rewards. Those who bought "Save the World" before it becomes free will receive the following items:

• 1x Hero Supercharger – To promote a hero beyond level 50.
• 1x Weapon Supercharger – To promote a weapon beyond level 50.
• 1x Trap Supercharger – To promote a trap beyond level 50.
• 5x Survivor Supercharger – To promote survivors beyond level 50.
• 1x Hero Recruitment Voucher – Allows players to recruit a desired hero.
• 1x Weapon Research Voucher – Allows players to unlock a desired weapon.
• 10,000 Gold

Founding members will continue to earn V-Bucks by completing daily quests, mission alerts, Storm Shield Defenses, and existing challenges, ensuring their original investment continues to provide value.

A pre-registration program for "Save the World" has also been opened. The more players who register before April 16th, the greater the rewards the entire community will receive.

The decision to make "Save the World" free was a long-anticipated move. Keeping it paid no longer aligned with Fortnite's current monetization ecosystem, especially considering the recent price increase for V-Bucks, a decision that has caused discontent among the community.
