Sony to End PlayStation Network (PSN) Branding; Services to Continue Under New Name
Sony is planning to rename its well-known online service, PlayStation Network (PSN), a fundamental component for multiplayer gaming, trophy management, and digital game purchases on its consoles. While the current names will be discontinued, the services will remain fully operational, simply under a new brand identity.
According to renowned insider Tom Henderson of Insider Gaming, Sony will gradually phase out the designations "PlayStation Network" and "PSN" starting in September 2026. This information comes from an official email Sony sent to developers, which Henderson had access to.
The email, as quoted by Henderson, states that "Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE) has made the strategic decision to progressively remove the names 'PlayStation Network' and 'PSN' from our platform to reflect the expansion and evolution of our digital services." It emphasizes that "the impending changes are exclusively visual and will not affect the technical functionality of the services." The goal is to "simplify and unify the brand," with the terms "PlayStation Network" and "PSN" being removed from all SIE assets by September 2026. All essential PSN features, such as the friends list, multiplayer mode, and trophies, will remain accessible to users.
As of this publication, the new name that PlayStation's network services platform will adopt, set to launch in September, remains unknown.
This decision seems peculiar, given the strong reputation and clear understanding that the current names hold within the community. While Sony might be preparing a broader platform restructuring that justifies this rebranding, there's a concern that it could be an initiative driven by an ambitious executive vision, hinting at recent cases where drastic renaming of established brands hasn't yielded the expected success.
