Super Mario Galaxy Movie Plot Details Fuel Peach and Rosalina Theory

With just a few days left until the release of the new Super Mario movie, its plot is already sparking discussion. A theory concerning Princess Peach's origins has resurfaced, fueled by the British Board of Film Classification's (BBFC) official description for Super Mario Galaxy: The Movie, which unveiled an intriguing story element.

This article may contain potential spoilers for the film, though these are based on interpretations that could be incorrect.

The BBFC's page for Super Mario Galaxy: The Movie states that the film features "infrequent mild threat in flashback sequences of a young girl being separated from her younger sister."

Following this revelation, Nintendo lore enthusiasts began speculating about the sisters' identities, with many concluding they could be Rosalina and Princess Peach.

In the first Super Mario Bros. movie, Peach informed Mario that she was not native to the Mushroom Kingdom, but rather discovered and raised there. While some interpret this to mean she also hails from the "human world" like Mario and Luigi, others suggest a connection to another iconic character: Rosalina.

In Rosalina's storybook chapters, included in the Nintendo Switch version of Super Mario Galaxy 2, Rosalina states she is "waiting for someone very dear whom she had lost." While this most likely refers to her mother (who became a star), some fans believe it could hint at another family member. The theory linking Rosalina and Peach is so popular that Game Theory dedicated a video to it in 2014, which has garnered over 16 million views.

Another interpretation is that the "separation of a young girl and her younger sister" in Super Mario Galaxy: The Movie's plot doesn't refer to Rosalina and Peach, but rather to Mari and Lu, two Lumas from the Super Mario Galaxy 2 storybook who also experience separation. Their names are references to Mario and Luigi, with Lu actually being the known character Lubba from the games.

The truth of this theory concerning Rosalina and Peach will be confirmed upon the worldwide theatrical release of Super Mario Galaxy: The Movie on Wednesday, April 1, 2026.
