Zelda: Ocarina of Time Remake & New Star Fox Rumored for Switch 2; 3D Mario by 2027

Persistent reports from insider Natethehate indicate Nintendo's plans to launch a significant remake of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time and a new Star Fox game this year. Conversely, a new 3D Super Mario title is not expected on the Nintendo Switch 2 until 2027. Should the Zelda: Ocarina of Time remake materialize for Switch 2, it would be the second rendition after the 3D-enhanced version released for the 3DS in 2011. The notion of this remake has circulated before, but the approaching 40th anniversary of the Zelda franchise lends considerable weight to its potential realization.

According to Nate's podcast, this "classic style" Star Fox game for the Switch 2 is projected for a mid-year release, a timing that seemingly aligns with Fox McCloud's cameo in the Super Mario Galaxy movie.

"I've been told it's a classic style Star Fox game, that the graphics will be very good, and that it will have online multiplayer."

If these reports are accurate, it would mark the first significant Star Fox release in a decade, following Star Fox Zero by PlatinumGames for the Wii U in April 2016. Similarly, the successor to the 3D Mario game, Super Mario Odyssey, which launched in October 2017 for the original Switch, would also arrive almost a decade later. For The Legend of Zelda, a completely original game on Switch 2 is still years away. This void, along with a potential live-action film possibly incorporating narrative elements from the game, could be driving the renewed interest in an Ocarina of Time remake. Even recent LEGO Zelda sets reportedly nod to Ocarina of Time.

“But this year marks another anniversary, that of The Legend of Zelda… what I can share with you today is that, in the second half of 2026, near the holiday season, we will have an Ocarina of Time remake for Switch 2,” states Natethehate.

While a full Nintendo Direct is not expected until June, Nintendo might release minor announcements via social media. These could include new visuals for games like Splatoon Raiders and Fire Emblem: Fortune’s Weave, alongside anticipated Nintendo Switch 2 versions of Pikmin 4 and Xenoblade 2.

Launched in 1998 for the Nintendo 64, The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time stands as one of Nintendo's most celebrated titles and holds the distinction of being the highest-rated game of all time on Metacritic. Thirteen years separated the N64 original from its 3DS remake, and by June, 15 years will have passed since that remake. The Zelda franchise itself commemorated its 40th anniversary on February 21st, tracing back to its initial release on the Famicom Disk System. The upcoming film's premiere on May 7, 2027, could potentially align with a broader anniversary celebration, given that the first game debuted in America on August 22, 1987.
