A New Generation for Italy: Rising Stars Emerge, but Chiesa's Bridge to Nazionale May Be Burnt

As Italy faces another national team rebuild, promising young talents such as Davide Bartesaghi, Luca Koleosho, and Giovanni Leoni are poised to join the senior squad. However, it appears Federico Chiesa may have squandered his final opportunity with the Azzurri.

The Italian national team finds itself at a critical juncture following its unprecedented failure to qualify for three consecutive World Cup tournaments.

While a new coach is still to be appointed after Gennaro Gattuso's departure, their primary responsibility will be to integrate a fresh generation of players into the Italy setup.

Italy's Hopes Rest on the Next Generation to Revive Fortunes

Several players are already making their mark at the Under-21 level and securing regular club appearances. These include Milan full-back Davide Bartesaghi, Fiorentina midfielder Cher Ndour, Paris FC winger Luca Koleosho, and Atalanta's Honest Ahanor. Furthermore, Brentford right-back Michael Kayode has already progressed beyond the Azzurrini youth setup.

Liverpool defender Giovanni Leoni and Milan-owned Francesco Camarda were also demonstrating significant potential before their respective injuries prematurely ended their seasons.

In contrast, some players who once showed great promise have since stalled in their development and are no longer considered young prospects. This group includes Nicolò Zaniolo, Tottenham's Destiny Udogie, struggling Torino midfielder Cesare Casadei, Milan's 26-year-old Matteo Gabbia, and Fiorentina midfielder Nicolò Fagioli.

Even Antonio Vergara, who dramatically burst onto the scene at Napoli during an injury crisis that forced Antonio Conte to feature him, made his Serie A debut at nearly 23 years old.

As a new generation rises, older players are likely to be phased out. Leonardo Spinazzola and Matteo Politano, for instance, are probably nearing the end of their national team careers, particularly if the 3-5-2 formation remains the preferred tactical approach.

Federico Chiesa appears to have severed his last ties with the national team, having reportedly rejected call-ups from Gattuso multiple times. Unlike Giovanni Di Lorenzo, Mattia Zaccagni, and Guglielmo Vicario, Chiesa chose to return to Liverpool immediately after failing a fitness test, rather than remaining with the squad.

With Chiesa turning 29 in October and grappling with what are now effectively chronic injury issues, his long-term reliability for the Nazionale's future is highly questionable.
