Palladino: Atalanta's Top-Four Quest Begins with Convincing Lecce Victory

Raffaele Palladino expressed his satisfaction after Atalanta's dominant 3-0 away victory over Lecce, a result that significantly boosted their pursuit of a top-four finish. He declared, "This was the first of eight finals; we will continue our ascent up that mountain."

La Dea has now firmly re-entered the race for a coveted top-four spot and a return to the Champions League. Their emphatic 3-0 win against Lecce marked a strong start to the final eight-game sprint of the season.

The goals came from Giorgio Scalvini in the first half at the Stadio Via del Mare, followed by Nikola Krstovic and Giacomo Raspadori. Goalkeeper Marco Carnesecchi had a quiet game, facing no significant threats.

Palladino Confident in Atalanta's Push for Comeback

"This match presented numerous hidden challenges, as the first game after an international break is always difficult, bringing everyone back together," Palladino told DAZN Italia.

"Preparation was not straightforward, and both teams contended with the heat due to changing temperatures, which made our passing somewhat predictable early on."

"We made adjustments as the game progressed and did well to exploit space. I am pleased with the team's performance, and another clean sheet instills further confidence in our defense."

While a top-four finish and Champions League qualification seemed unlikely when Palladino took charge from Ivan Juric in November, the current outlook is dramatically different.

Atalanta now sit within five points of fourth place, especially after Como's 0-0 draw against Udinese today.

"We anticipated Lecce's aggressive approach, as this was a crucial game for them. I was particularly impressed by the maturity our team displayed in handling their initial strong offensive," Palladino explained.

"We allowed them space down the flanks with Banda and Pierotti but effectively sealed off central channels through our quality, technique, and dynamism."

After being eliminated from the Champions League Round of 16 by Bayern Munich, Atalanta remains active in the Coppa Italia semi-finals, having secured a 2-2 draw in the first leg against Lazio.

"We have two direct league clashes approaching, plus the Coppa Italia semi-final, so I urged the team to elevate their game. Everyone is fully committed to this challenge," the coach emphasized.

"Our core philosophy is to attack and defend collectively. The players understand how much I value every individual contributing to both phases of play. In the final third, we need selflessness to find the player in the optimal scoring position; I observed some of that today, and we could have won by an even larger margin."

The boost for Atalanta wasn't solely from Como's draw; Roma's significant 5-2 loss to Inter also means La Dea are now just one point behind their former coach Gian Piero Gasperini's team in sixth place.

"Naturally, those results were favorable for us, but I focused on keeping the players concentrated on our own journey. I asked them to conclude this season by giving their absolute best, and then we will see where we ultimately stand," Palladino concluded.
