Betclic Elite: JL Bourg Shows Resilience to Defeat Paris Basketball

In a display of unwavering determination, JL Bourg triumphed over Paris Basketball this Sunday at the adidas arena. Coming into the match with strong momentum, having qualified for the Eurocup semi-finals and recently defeated Paris Basketball in the Leaders Cup (74-79), Bourg-en-Bresse capitalized on the capital club's recent three-game losing streak across all competitions.

Despite the early third-quarter exclusion of Adam Mokoka (11 points) and a phenomenal 20-point performance (10/10 shooting) from Paris's Amath M'baye, Bourg-en-Bresse secured a notable 95-85 victory. Stellar contributions from Both Gach, who scored 21 points, and Darius McGhee, who led all scorers with 24 points, were crucial in overcoming the reigning champions.

Parisian guard Nadir Hifi struggled with his shooting (4/15 from the field), largely due to the tight defense of Assémian Moularé. Moularé commented after the game, "I've known him for quite a while, since the Espoirs league. He's a good player. As soon as he released the ball, I tried to cut him off. That disrupted his rhythm a bit. I knew that if I made a small mistake, he would punish me."

A Slow Start for Bourg

Paradoxically, it was Paris who started the game stronger. After a somewhat lackadaisical opening with two turnovers in two minutes, they quickly found their rhythm. Led by former Bourg player Jeremy Morgan and later by Amath M'baye, who were effective from beyond the arc, Paris established an early lead (10-2, 5th minute; 16-5, 6th minute).

Paris maintained defensive intensity, highlighted by Momo Faye's two blocks on Adam Mokoka during a single possession (18-5, 7th minute). However, Mokoka's first successful three-pointer for JL Bourg (18-8, 8th minute) sparked a response from his teammates, who began to chip away at the lead by attacking the interior, ending the first quarter down 23-16.

Although Mokoka continued his effective play (25-19, 12th minute), Paris re-established a comfortable margin, with Amath M'baye already reaching 10 points (37-26, 15th minute). Rather than faltering, Coach Frédéric Fauthoux's squad relied on the excellent penetration skills of Both Gach, who tallied 12 points by halftime, to keep the deficit around ten points.

Despite his team's struggles from long range (3/12 at halftime), the South Sudanese Gach continued to score effectively near the rim, further reducing the gap (40-33, 18th minute). It seemed that Bourg only needed to find their three-point touch to fully catch up, and they did just that. Following a quick 5-point burst from Darius McGhee, Bourg-en-Bresse closed the half with their smallest deficit since the opening quarter (42-38, 20th minute).

After the break, Bourg-en-Bresse maintained their momentum, with Mokoka still finding success from distance (46-43, 22nd minute). However, his game took a dramatic turn moments later. First, he was whistled for a defensive foul. Then, two possessions later, a debatable offensive foul was called against him. Frustrated, the former Bulls player immediately received a technical foul, bringing his total to five and sending him to the bench for the remainder of the match.

Mokoka's Exclusion: A Catalyst for Bourg

"Adam's fifth foul was an electroshock for everyone," declared Assémian Moularé in the post-game interview. Moularé himself then hit two three-pointers to tie the game (51-51, 24th minute), before McGhee put Bourg ahead with an exceptional nine-meter shot (52-54, 25th minute). The in-form American delivered a true masterclass in the third quarter, scoring 14 points to give his team a two-possession lead (59-63, 27th minute).

In response, M'baye was largely isolated for Paris (9 points in the third quarter) but managed to keep them within striking distance of Bourg. However, his efforts weren't enough to regain the lead. On the final possession of the period, Assémian Moularé, who was highly energetic in the second half, perfectly set up Tre Mitchell under the basket (65-69, 30th minute).

The margin remained largely unchanged at the start of the final quarter, until Gach connected on Bourg's twelfth three-pointer of the game, banking it in (71-78, 32nd minute). Paris Basketball, however, refused to be buried, with a resurgence from Nadir Hifi keeping them alive (78-80, 36th minute). A smooth finish from Momo Faye (80-81, 37th minute) foreshadowed a nail-biting money-time.

At this crucial moment, McGhee launched his fifth long-range arrow of the evening (80-84, 37th minute). In the final minute, Both Gach countered the "Prince of Paris" with a well-executed drive, extending JL Bourg's lead to four points (84-88, 40th minute). William McDowell White then sealed the suspense with 17 seconds left on the clock (85-91, 40th minute).

Paris coach Francesco Tabellini reflected after the game, "They were very good at shooting in the second half. We weren't able to remain as aggressive and solid as we showed at the start of the match."

Having defeated ASVEL, Monaco, and now Paris, JL Bourg has overcome the three French Euroleague teams in the Betclic Élite. While theoretically two wins away from securing a Euroleague ticket for next season, Frédéric Fauthoux adopted a cautious tone after the match, though hinting at optimism. "Honestly, we know who we are and we won't get ahead of ourselves. That would be lying to ourselves. It's true that right now, we're putting in good performances against big teams. But we've also faltered against other teams. And when you want to be a big team, you have to be more consistent. We know we're capable of beating Euroleague teams, at least in our league. The very top level means performing every three days. Are we capable of that with the team we have today? I don't know. We performed on Tuesday and Sunday. We had plenty of time to prepare for this match, while they had played an Euroleague game. But, as I am an optimistic person, I want to believe in it."
