New 15,000-Seat Arena Envisioned for Berlin
The Berlin Senate has publicly backed a proposal for a new 15,000-seat sports arena, a commitment confirmed by Sports Senator Iris Spranger.
The state-owned site for the potential construction was reportedly suggested by the Senate itself. Marco Baldi, General Manager of the basketball club Alba Berlin, is set to present a comprehensive feasibility study to the sports committee of the House of Representatives.
The total projected cost for this substantial infrastructure project is estimated to be several hundred million euros. While the financing aspects are still being finalized, Alba Berlin has indicated that preliminary discussions with prospective investors are already in progress.
The announcement of this arena project significantly strengthens Alba Berlin's bid to join the upcoming NBA European league. Within Germany, Munich is also under consideration, alongside other major European capitals such as London, Paris, and Rome. NBA Commissioner Adam Silver has expressed his aim to launch this new European division as early as October 2027.
Currently, Alba Berlin plays its home games at the Uber Arena, which offers a capacity of 14,500 for basketball events. However, the club faces challenges due to high rental costs. Their preferred venue, the Max-Schmeling-Halle, with an 8,500-seat capacity, is often unavailable and considered too small, frequently being booked by other clubs and various events.
