T20 World Cup 2026 Final: Shoaib Akhtar Warns India of 1.5 Billion People's Pressure Against New Zealand

Former Pakistan cricket star Shoaib Akhtar has voiced his opinion that the Indian team will face immense pressure in the ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2026 final. This pressure, according to Akhtar, comes not only from the high stakes of the championship match but also from the staggering expectations of approximately 1.5 billion fans. Akhtar further suggested that the memory of India’s painful defeat in the 2023 ICC Cricket World Cup Final, where the Rohit Sharma-led side lost to Australia at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, could contribute to this pressure.

As the Suryakumar Yadav-led Indian squad prepares to clash with New Zealand in the final at the very same venue, the upcoming contest holds profound significance. This match will mark the fourth encounter between these two formidable teams in the history of the T20 World Cup. Notably, New Zealand has maintained an undefeated record against India in the tournament, having won all three of their previous face-offs. Under Mitchell Santner's captaincy, the New Zealand team will be keen to extend this impressive streak, potentially toppling the defending champions and clinching their inaugural T20 World Cup title.

“If the pitch at Ahmedabad offers grip and is favorable for spinners, a par score would be around 175-200. A truly safe total would exceed 200. The crucial question is whether New Zealand can score 225 or 250 against India. If they manage that, India will be under tremendous pressure. However, it's equally clear that India will be meticulously prepared. While I foresee New Zealand possibly struggling against India, the Indian team also carries the weight of 1.5 billion people's expectations. They have already experienced a World Cup final loss to Australia at Ahmedabad. Ultimately, I still believe India will emerge victorious, but for the sake of competitive cricket, it’s high time New Zealand won this World Cup,” Akhtar commented.

Prior to the T20 World Cup 2026, New Zealand had recently suffered a 1-4 defeat in a five-match T20I series against India on Indian soil. However, they had previously achieved a significant success by winning a three-match Test series against India 3-0 in 2024. Former Pakistan fast bowler Umar Gul also rated New Zealand highly when discussing the impending final. Gul suggested that despite India’s stellar form throughout the tournament, the sheer burden of national expectations could heavily influence their performance in the title match.
